How to Disable Gemini in Chrome
You can disable Gemini and built-in AI features in Google Chrome by turning off individual AI settings and hiding the shortcut. Follow these steps to disable the feature across your browser:
1. Hide the Gemini Shortcut
If you just want to remove the “Ask Gemini” button from your tab or address bar:
- Right-click the Gemini (or Ask Gemini) icon.
- Select Unpin.
2. Turn Off AI Innovations
To disable Chrome’s writing tools, history search, and tab organizer:
- Click the three dots (menu) in the top right corner of Chrome and go to Settings.
- On the left menu, select AI Innovations (or You and Google).
- Toggle off features like Help me write, History search, and Gemini in Chrome.
3. Disable On-Device AI (Gemini Nano)
To remove local AI data processing from your computer:
- In Settings, go to System.
- Toggle On-device AI to the Off position.
4. Hide the Omnibox Search Shortcut
To disable the AI mode entry in your address bar:
- Open a new tab and type chrome://flags in the address bar, then press Enter.
- Search for AI mode Omnibox entrypoint.
- Change the dropdown menu next to it from Default to Disabled.
- Click the Relaunch button that appears at the bottom to apply changes.
5. Deactivate Gemini Site Search
To ensure Chrome doesn’t default to AI search queries:
- Go to Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search.
- Look for Gemini in your site search list, click the menu next to it, and select Deactivate.
6. Turn Off Google Account Gemini Activity
To stop Google from tracking and using your Gemini interactions:
- Visit your Google Activity Page.
- Turn off Gemini Apps Activity.
